Strawberry Milkshake Lake
Manly Wine - 18th Jun, 2012
We love this, maybe because it looks like something Willy Wonka would dream up. Pinker than any strawberry milkshake, Lake Retba (or Lac Rose as the French call it) is located in Senegal, a country in West Africa.

The pink hue is caused by cyanobacteria, which is a harmless bacteria found in the water. The lake also has a high salt content - higher than the Dead Sea - which allows people to float effortlessly.

During the dry season the pink is at its most vibrant, and depending on the time of day changes from a light purple to a deep scarlet pink. Just don’t be tempted to put a sippy straw into the water!
